Colts, Panthers and Vikings face major uncertainty at quarterback heading into 2026

Indianapolis, Carolina and Minnesota project as three of the NFL’s more volatile quarterback rooms entering the 2026 season, with each team carrying a different kind of risk — from injury recovery to limited proven depth and inconsistent recent production.

Indianapolis Colts Indianapolis’ outlook largely depends on Daniel Jones’ recovery from a torn Achilles suffered in Week 14 of the 2025 season. Before the injury, Jones was productive through 14 games, posting a 100.2 passer rating and 24 total touchdowns.

Behind him, former No. 4 overall pick Anthony Richardson remains a high-variance option asourceser a difficult 2024 season in which he completed 47.7% of his passes and recorded a 61.6 passer rating. Riley Leonard is viewed as a developmental quarterback. If Jones is medically cleared, he is projected to open 2026 as the Colts’ Week 1 starter.

Carolina Panthers In Carolina, Bryce Young is expected to remain the starter. The former No. 1 overall pick set career highs in 2025 for completion percentage (63.6%), passing yards per game (188.2) and passing touchdowns (23).

Even so, his 3,011 passing yards were cited as one of the lowest totals by a quarterback to reach the playoffs in the past two decades, underscoring how much the Panthers’ room still relies on Young taking another step forward in week-to-week consistency.

The Panthers’ depth includes Kenny Pickett and Will Grier, leaving limited proven insurance behind Young.

Minnesota Vikings Minnesota’s quarterback room is led by Kyler Murray, but durability remains central to the evaluation. He missed 30 of 68 games from 2022 through 2025, and in five appearances in 2025 he averaged 227.0 total yards per game.

First-round pick J.J. McCarthy is presented as an unproven alternative asourceser a 2025 line that included a 57.6% completion rate and a 72.6 passer rating. Murray is currently projected as Minnesota’s Week 1 starter.

The big picture All three teams have plausible starting options, but each room carries notable risk — medical uncertainty, performance volatility, or limited certainty behind the top name on the depth chart — which is why they are grouped among the league’s weaker quarterback situations entering 2026.
