Qatar Faces Six-Time Champion South Korea in Asian Games Opener

Qatar's Olympic football team today opens its 2026 Asian Games campaign against South Korea at Mizuho Park Stadium in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.

This match marks the opening fixture for Group D, which also includes Saudi Arabia. The football tournament features 15 national teams divided into four groups; three groups comprise four teams, while Group D contains three.

South Korea Seeks Fourth Consecutive Title

Qatar previously secured the football gold medal at South Korea holds the record for most gold medals in Asian Games football, with six titles. The team aims for its fourth consecutive gold, having won in 2014, 2018, and 2022. Qatar previously secured the football gold medal at the 2006 Asian Games. The group stage will proceed in a single round-robin format. The top two teams from each group will advance to the quarter-finals, followed by semi-finals, a final, and a third-place playoff match. Qatar's 23-Player Squad Announced Jose Angel Lacunza, head coach of the Qatar Under-23 team, selected a 23-player squad for the tournament. The roster includes goalkeepers Abubakar Mohammed, Jalal Amir, and Mohammed Fawzi, alongside field players such as Mohammed Hani, Faisal Mohammed, Yaman Jarrar, and Bassam Adel.

The Qatar delegation, comprising 243 athletes (184 men and 59 women) across 18 sports federations, traveled from Doha to Aichi-Nagoya on Friday to commence preparations. The Asian Games officially run from September 19 to October 4.
