Philippine Impeachment Court Dismisses Majority of Charges Against Vice President

The Philippine Senate has dismissed three of four impeachment charges against Vice President Sara Duterte, including allegations of misused funds and an assassination threat against the president. Prosecutors requested the withdrawal of these counts to focus exclusively on the remaining charge of unexplained wealth. This strategic shift aims to expedite the trial proceedings, which have been ongoing since July.

Despite the reduction in charges, the Vice President remains at risk of permanent disqualification from elected office if convicted on the final count. A conviction would effectively terminate her eligibility for the 2028 presidential election, for which she currently leads in independent polling.

The Senate has previously lowered the threshold for a guilty verdict to a two-thirds majority of participating members, rather than the full chamber. This procedural adjustment, combined with the absence of four senators aligned with the Vice President, increases the probability of a successful ouster. The defense has characterized the prosecution's withdrawal of charges as procedurally unfair given the volume of evidence already presented.
