Poland Puts Ground Forces on Standby After Airspace Incursion

Poland's armed forces said one Russian military helicopter entered its airspace near Braniewo on Sept. 27, prompting them to scramble fighter jets and put ground-based forces on standby.

Officials said the aircraft was intercepted and left Polish airspace after the scramble; the ministry said the episode took place close to the country's northeastern border with Russia's Kaliningrad region.

Officials said ground units along the frontier were placed on heightened alert and that the incident is under military investigation. The armed forces described the move as a violation of Polish airspace and said they were collecting radar and flight data.

The episode adds to a string of recent run-ins near Poland's border, officials said, increasing attention among allied commands to airspace monitoring and rapid interception procedures. If incursions recur, allied air patrols could be reinforced and coordination on quick-reaction alerts tightened; if the incident remains isolated, officials said, it is more likely to be treated as a single breach requiring a formal protest rather than a wider force posture change.

Officials said they would publish additional details and an initial investigative update within 24 hours. In the meantime, Warsaw maintained that all responses would follow established defensive protocols and alliance consultation procedures.
