Mass Detentions in New Delhi Following Youth-Led Election Commission Protests
Indian authorities detained over 2,000 protesters in New Delhi to suppress demonstrations challenging the Election Commission's recent voter roll revisions.

Indian authorities detained over 2,000 individuals in New Delhi on Saturday to preempt a youth-led protest movement. The security operation involved widespread checkpoints, barricades, and the deployment of anti-riot vehicles, effectively preventing a planned gathering at the Jantar Mantar protest site.
The movement, organized by the Cockroach Janta Party, demands the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner. Protesters allege that a recent Special Intensive Revision of voter rolls disenfranchised approximately 130 million voters, disproportionately benefiting the governing Bharatiya Janata Party ahead of upcoming state elections.
Government officials characterized the movement as an attempt to incite disorder and maintained that the protest lacked necessary authorization. The crackdown included the detention of opposition lawmakers, student activists, and legal professionals, alongside the suspension of mobile internet services in the central business district.
These events signal heightened political volatility regarding the integrity of electoral processes. The incident highlights increasing friction between the administration and youth-led movements, raising concerns regarding the preservation of civil liberties and the perceived neutrality of the Election Commission.
