ESA Astronaut Completes Record-Breaking 237-Day International Space Station Mission

European Space Agency (ESA) astronaut Sophie Adenot has returned to Germany following a 237-day mission aboard the International Space Station. The mission, designated εpsilon, established a new European record for the longest single spaceflight, surpassing the previous duration by 35 days.

During the deployment, the crew completed the longest SpaceX Dragon mission to date. Adenot conducted three extravehicular activities, marking the first time a French woman has performed a spacewalk.

The mission included the execution of 35 European research payloads and the testing of new technologies, including in-orbit metal 3D printing and advanced exercise equipment. These activities were designed to support future exploration objectives and enhance crew autonomy.

ESA officials have indicated that the mission’s success serves as a strategic benchmark ahead of the upcoming Intermediate Ministerial Council Meeting in December. The agency aims to leverage these operational results to advocate for a greater European role in international space exploration, citing the need for contributions commensurate with the region's economic and political standing.
