The Green Bay Packers re-signed tight end Luke Lachey on Monday, June 10, bringing him back to the roster for the second time this offseason. The club announced the move Monday afternoon after previously claiming Lachey off waivers in May and then waiving him with a failed physical designation. Green Bay also made a corresponding move at wide receiver to clear a roster spot.
Lachey entered the NFL as a seventh-round pick of the Houston Texans in 2023. He spent his rookie season on Houston’s practice squad before the Texans waived him in May.
When the Packers first brought Lachey in this spring, the stint ended quickly due to the failed physical designation. His return suggests the issue that kept him from sticking at that time is no longer a concern for Green Bay at this stage of the offseason program.
Waiver move opens roster spot at wide receiver
To make room for Lachey, the Packers waived wide receiver Jakobie Keeney-James in a corresponding transaction. The move reflects the day-to-day churn of offseason roster management as teams sort through depth and availability.
Keeney-James saw limited regular-season action last season, finishing with two receptions in Week 18. His release gives Green Bay flexibility as it continues evaluating wide receivers heading toward training camp.
What the signing means for Green Bay’s tight end depth
Lachey’s re-signing adds another option for the Packers to evaluate in practices and team activities. Tight end is a position where clubs often cycle through players during the offseason, especially when medical assessments change and coaches want extra reps across the group.
How long Lachey stays in Green Bay will depend on his on-field progress and how the overall tight end room develops as the offseason work continues.
Green Bay’s next roster decisions are likely to come as participation and health become clearer in upcoming sessions and the team narrows its options ahead of camp.
