Military De-escalation Stalls Despite China-India Diplomatic Thaw

Diplomatic and economic relations between China and India have improved, marked by the resumption of direct flights, the reopening of border trade points, and high-level leadership meetings. Despite these developments, military-to-military communication remains restricted to crisis-management protocols established following the 2020 border tensions.

The absence of formal military dialogue channels persists even as bilateral trade exceeds $100 billion annually. This disconnect contrasts with the established communication frameworks maintained between the United States and the People’s Liberation Army.

The continued lack of institutionalized military engagement poses a structural risk to regional stability. Without formal communication mechanisms, the risk of miscalculation during border incidents remains elevated, regardless of positive diplomatic momentum in other sectors.
