Financial Instability and Credit Reliance Among Young Adults

Data indicates that only 49% of adults aged 18 to 24 are currently able to cover basic monthly living expenses. Financial independence remains low within this demographic, with only 19% of individuals in this age bracket reporting independence from parents or relatives.

Reliance on credit to bridge the gap between income and essential outgoings is increasing among younger cohorts. Research shows that 44% of individuals aged 18 to 34 have utilized credit specifically to cover housing costs, with 75% of those seeking debt assistance having accessed credit before age 21.

These trends suggest a systemic erosion of financial resilience, exacerbated by lingering pandemic-related career disruptions and persistent cost-of-living pressures. The findings align with broader banking sector reports projecting an increase in credit card defaults, signaling heightened institutional risk regarding consumer debt sustainability and long-term economic participation for younger generations.
