North Korea fired at least one ballistic missile on Saturday, Seoul's military said, following a Demilitarized Zone explosion last month that wounded three South Korean soldiers.
DMZ blast traced to North Korean mines
North Korean officials denied responsibility and called South Korea "despicable," the statement said. Seoul described the missile launch as a separate violation of the armistice line and notified allied partners, the military said.
Missile detected early Saturday
If Seoul formally labels the launch a provocation, allied commanders would consider calibrated responses, including changes to force posture near the DMZ; such actions could occur by Oct. 4, 2026, depending on official determinations and diplomatic engagement within the next 48 hours.
Seoul and the United Nations Command concluded that last month's explosion inside the DMZ was caused by North Korean mines laid on the South side of the border, officials said. The blast wounded three South Korean soldiers, prompting Seoul to demand an official apology.
Seoul's forces detected the ballistic launch early on Saturday and reported tracking information to allied commands, officials said. There was no immediate report of damage or casualties; monitoring and patrols near the DMZ were stepped up, the military added.
