The NC State women's soccer team registered its first loss of the season, falling 2-1 to the Miami Hurricanes. This result concluded the Wolfpack's ten-game undefeated run, their strongest start to a season since 1991.
Miami secured the decisive goal in the 80th minute when freshman midfielder Maddie Sadusky capitalized on a mispass by NC State freshman goalkeeper Riley Pickels, allowing the Hurricanes to take the lead late in the match.
Early Goal, Quick Response The Hurricanes initially took the lead in the 10th minute through Sadusky's first goal. NC State responded nine minutes later as senior defender Yuna Aoki scored, redirecting a shot from senior forward Erica Roberts to level the score.
Second Half Control Without Reward
NC State controlled possession and generated more shots during the second half following tactical adjustments aimed at widening their play. Despite increased offensive pressure, the Wolfpack could not convert their opportunities into a go-ahead goal, leading to a single shot on target for Miami that secured the win.
Coach Identifies Key Error
Head coach Gary Higgins acknowledged the team's disappointment, noting that the Wolfpack had sufficient chances to win the game. He attributed Miami's success to their effective counter-attacks and long balls, which ultimately punished NC State's late mistake. Higgins emphasized that similar errors in nonconference games had not led to losses, but the team could not afford them against a strong opponent like Miami.
Learning from Adversity
Higgins stated that freshman goalkeeper Riley Pickels must learn from her error. He highlighted that younger players often experience adversity as part of their development, stressing the importance of learning from such moments to prevent future occurrences.
Virginia Tech Next on Schedule
NC State will host Virginia Tech on Sunday, September 27, at Dail Soccer Field. The team aims to rebound from its first loss and secure a victory in the upcoming match. Higgins underscored the importance of maintaining a strong mindset and quickly recovering in a competitive league.
