NBA Europe Targets 2027 Launch, EuroLeague Discussions Continue

NBA Deputy Commissioner Mark Tatum confirmed plans for a 16-team NBA Europe league to launch in October 2027. This initiative is set to proceed even if the EuroLeague does not participate, as discussions continue with Europe's premier club competition.

Tatum emphasized that while an aligned outcome with the EuroLeague is preferred, the NBA is prepared to move forward with FIBA and other partners if an agreement is not reached. A further meeting with the EuroLeague is scheduled within the coming weeks to advance these critical negotiations.

Franchise Model and Investment

The proposed NBA Europe model envisions clubs securing permanent franchises through significant financial commitments. Reports from Sports Business Journal indicate that EuroLeague clubs would need to invest between $500 million and $1 billion to obtain these coveted permanent spots.

Tatum reiterated that a successful bid for a permanent franchise is the only route to guaranteed inclusion in the new league. He also highlighted that the NBA has investors and partners ready to proceed should an agreement with the EuroLeague prove elusive.

Strategic Alignment and Future Outlook

Acknowledging that proceeding without the EuroLeague would not be ideal, the NBA remains committed to fostering a constructive and collaborative environment across the European basketball ecosystem. The stated aim is to benefit the sport broadly across the continent.

Key EuroLeague powerhouses like Olympiacos, Real Madrid, Fenerbahçe, and Barcelona currently dominate European club basketball. Their potential involvement would significantly bolster the profile and competitiveness of any new league structure.

Upcoming Milestones and Luka Doncic’s Involvement

Bids for participation are expected to finalize by the end of June. Following this, the NBA will begin concluding negotiations with prospective clubs, with no specific timeline yet established for public announcements.

Notably, Los Angeles Lakers guard Luka Dončić has already committed to investing in an NBA Europe team based in Rome. Tatum praised Dončić's involvement, noting his EuroLeague background and understanding of the need for a robust system to elevate European basketball.
