Manchester T3 Ranks UK's Worst Airport in 2026 Survey

Manchester Airport's Terminal 3 received the lowest satisfaction score among UK airports in a 2026 consumer survey, while Exeter Airport earned the top ranking. The Which? report highlighted significant passenger dissatisfaction with Manchester T3 due to extended queues, poor cleanliness, and insufficient seating, contrasting with Exeter's efficient check-in and security processes.

Manchester T3 Faces Passenger Backlash

Manchester Terminal 3 registered a 52 percent customer satisfaction rating, placing it last in the comprehensive survey. The facility received a two-star rating across all evaluated categories, including cleanliness, seating, and overall design. Passengers reported check-in lines extending up to two hours due to malfunctioning equipment, alongside 20-minute waits for café service and restrooms.

Layout and Seating Draw Criticism

A recurring complaint centered on inadequate seating, with some travelers noting a complete absence of places to sit. The terminal's layout also drew criticism for its poor design, contributing to long walking distances between security checkpoints and departure gates. Manchester Airport stated security checkpoints and lounges currently operate in the former Terminal 1 area, which closed in November.

Refurbishment Efforts Underway

Manchester Airport acknowledged the issues, confirming a large refurbishment project is in progress. This initiative aims to replace outdated travelators and enhance passenger flow throughout the terminal. Following Manchester T3, Luton Airport ranked as the second-worst, scoring 57 percent, with Manchester Terminal 2 close behind at 58 percent.

Exeter Leads UK Airport Satisfaction

Exeter Airport achieved the highest satisfaction score at 83 percent, earning a four-star rating for its check-in queues, security queues, and cleanliness. The airport also received five-star ratings for its check-in and security areas, indicating a highly efficient pre-flight experience. Food and drink outlets at Exeter received a three-star rating, its lowest category score.

Smaller Hubs Outperform Larger Counterparts

Liverpool John Lennon Airport secured second place with a 79 percent score, benefiting from its proximity to the city center. London City Airport also performed strongly, recording a 78 percent rating. The survey data suggests smaller, regional airports generally offer a more seamless and less stressful travel experience compared to larger, more heavily trafficked hubs.

Industry Implications and Future Outlook

The survey's findings underscore a broader trend in aviation infrastructure, emphasizing thoughtful design, efficient service, and comfortable environments. Airport authorities and managers across the UK face pressure to address these deficiencies through facility refurbishments, process streamlining, expanded seating, and improved food and beverage options. This focus aims to elevate the overall travel experience and bolster confidence in UK aviation.
