LIV Golf Confirms 2026 Season Will Proceed

LIV Golf said on Wednesday that its 2026 season will go ahead as scheduled , seeking to calm uncertainty that had built up around the league’s long-term funding. The statement came after an executive meeting in New York and followed the release of a new Saudi investment strategy that did not reference sports, which had fueled speculation about whether financial support could change.

In an email to staff, LIV Golf Chief Executive Scott O’Neil said the 2026 campaign would continue “uninterrupted and at full throttle.” The league’s message was framed as a direct response to the recent questions surrounding its Saudi Arabian backing, and it was issued as LIV Golf prepared for its fifth event of the season in Mexico City.

The league has been funded by Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund (PIF), which has invested over $5 billion in LIV Golf since the circuit launched in 2021. LIV Golf has used that backing to sign high-profile players, including Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson, and Jon Rahm, helping it establish itself quickly in the men’s professional game.

LIV Golf’s arrival has also reshaped the sport’s competitive and commercial landscape by creating a deep split across tours. The PGA Tour and DP World Tour imposed sanctions on players who left to compete for LIV Golf, a move that underscored how the new league challenged existing governance and player pathways in elite golf.

Former Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley said the PGA Tour could take a hard line toward players who want to return after leaving, pointing to the financial incentives that drew them to LIV Golf in the first place. His comments reflected the continuing tension around player eligibility and reintegration, even as LIV Golf sought to project stability about its own schedule.

What remains unclear from the league’s announcement is how the omission of sports from the newly published Saudi investment strategy will be interpreted by stakeholders over time, and whether it will continue to generate questions despite LIV Golf’s assurances. For now, the league’s leadership has emphasized continuity, while the broader professional golf ecosystem continues to manage the consequences of the sport’s recent fragmentation.
