Hall of Fame basketball coach Rick Adelman died on Monday at age 79. Adelman, who twice led the Portland Trail Blazers to the NBA Finals, passed away in the Portland area, where he had lived since retiring from coaching in 2014. The Blazers reached the NBA Finals in 1990 and 1992, winning the Western Conference with a deep, athletic roster that thrived under his balanced, up-tempo style.

He first joined Portland’s staff as an assistant in 1983, was elevated to interim head coach in 1989, and earned the permanent role after steering the team to the postseason that spring. Adelman began his coaching career at Chemeketa Community College in Salem in 1977 before returning to the NBA as an assistant under Jack Ramsay in Portland. He went on to build a long head-coaching résumé that included stints in Golden State, Sacramento, Houston and Minnesota, consistently delivering winning seasons and deep playoff pushes across four decades.

His achievements were recognized with induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2021. He also received the NBCA Chuck Daly Lifetime Achievement Award in 2023, underscoring the respect he earned from peers and players. The Trail Blazers said his leadership, integrity and kindness left a lasting impact on the organization and the wider basketball community.

Adelman’s professional playing career began in 1968. He spent nine NBA seasons with five organizations, including a three-year stint with the Trail Blazers.
