San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan will work in a limited capacity at the start of training camp after being seriously injured in a vehicle collision on July 14, officials said. The crash occurred near his Northern California home, and the team said Shanahan is following medical protocols as he recovers.
Shanahan, 46, sustained a severe concussion along with multiple fractures in the incident. Officials said his injuries include three broken ribs, a broken nose, and a broken hand.
Training camp leadership shifts to Chris Foerster and coordinators
With Shanahan unable to fully participate in the opening phase of camp, the 49ers are temporarily reassigning day-to-day leadership responsibilities, the team said. Assistant head coach Chris Foerster and the club’s coordinators will share oversight to keep preparations on schedule.
Officials described the plan as a continuity measure designed to maintain normal operations while Shanahan complies with concussion-related medical guidance. The team expects the limits on his role to remain in place until he receives medical clearance to return to full duties.
Team says Week 1 availability is not expected to change
General manager John Lynch said the organization does not anticipate Shanahan’s injuries will affect his availability for the Week 1 regular-season opener. The team’s immediate priority, officials added, is to manage the recovery process while keeping the training camp program steady.
Local law enforcement confirmed that drugs and alcohol were not factors in the collision. Officials also said no other individuals were injured.
Shanahan’s tenure and camp priorities during recovery
Shanahan is in his tenth season with the 49ers and has led the team since 2017. Officials cited his 82-67 regular-season record over that span.
As the club begins camp, the coaching staff’s reassignment is intended to preserve stability while maintaining the focus on player development and installation work. Officials said the team aims to support Shanahan’s return to full responsibilities without disrupting preparations for the upcoming season, while acknowledging that his timeline depends on medical clearance.
