Katherine Legge will attempt the Indy 500/Coca-Cola 600 Double on Sunday, May 24, becoming the sixth driver in history and the first woman and non-American to take on the challenge in a single day. The 45-year-old British racer has secured a late deal to contest both events. She will run the Indianapolis 500 in the afternoon before heading to Charlotte Motor Speedway for NASCAR’s longest race.

The Indianapolis 500 start marks Legge’s return with HMD Motorsports/AJ Foyt Racing for the 110th running of the event. Her NASCAR entry with Live Fast Motorsports adds a second marquee race to the schedule on the same date, the 67th running of the Coca-Cola 600. Team officials said Legge will drive the No. 78 at Charlotte following her Indy 500 duties earlier in the day. The program consolidates sponsorship and logistics under a unified effort with e.l.f. Cosmetics.

Legge made her eighth career NASCAR Cup Series start last weekend at Watkins Glen, building seat time ahead of the Charlotte oval challenge. While she has four previous Indy 500 starts, her best finish at the Brickyard is 22nd in 2012. Sunday’s NASCAR race will be her debut in the 600. At 45, she is also set to be the oldest driver to attempt the same-day Double.

A rare 1,100-mile challenge

Only five drivers have previously attempted to contest both the Indy 500 and the Coca-Cola 600 on the same day: Kyle Larson, Robby Gordon, John Andretti, Kurt Busch and Tony Stewart. Stewart remains the only driver to complete every lap of both races, achieving the feat in 2001. Davy Jones attempted the Double in 1995 but did not qualify for the 600. Legge’s effort would make her the first woman and first non-American to try the demanding crossover.
