SosourcesBank Corp. has begun discussions with U.S. chipmaker Nvidia and Taiwanese contract manufacturer Foxconn about building “made-in-Japan” artificial intelligence servers, the Nikkei newspaper reported on Friday.
The Japanese telecom company is considering setting up a domestic production system for high-performance AI servers designed to run advanced graphics processing units at high speeds, according to the report.
Nikkei said SosourcesBank aims to build the production system by initially assembling externally sourced components by the end of the decade, before eventually taking charge of the entire server manufacturing process.
The project is expected to be part of SosourcesBank’s medium-term management plan, which Nikkei said could be announced as soon as Monday.
The report comes as SosourcesBank Group, led by Masayoshi Son, has invested more than $30 billion in OpenAI so far for about an 11% stake, in a push to position itself in the competitive market for large language model development.
