The opening 45 minutes were cagey, with the two sides largely cancelling each other out and limiting clear chances. The contest changed in the second half, when the Netherlands’ threat from set pieces paid off through van Dijk’s opener.

Japan’s response was immediate, using the momentum from their equaliser to keep the match stretched. The Netherlands again moved in front through Summerville’s curled finish, but Japan continued to press and eventually forced a late breakthrough from a corner, with Kamada credited with the goal after the ball took a deflection.

Japan and the Netherlands entered the tournament with expectations of being capable of a deep run, and the draw underlined how competitive Group F could be. Both teams are in North America without key players due to injury, but the match still delivered one of the more attractive fixtures of the group stage on paper.
