IRS delays two releases on tax breaks after 2025 cuts
The agency said it is waiting for Treasury approval, while former IRS officials questioned the timing and legal basis for the delay.

The IRS missed two scheduled releases of tax-break data tied to President Donald Trump’s 2025 One Big Beautiful Bill Act, Politico reported on Oct. 14, according to The New Republic.
The delay matters because the figures, first due in July and then set for a September update, would show how tax breaks and tax payments differed across income brackets after the law.
The IRS said it is waiting for Treasury Department approval to publish the information, The New Republic reported, citing Politico. The data could indicate whether benefits and burdens changed between income groups, according to Barry Johnson, a former top IRS official quoted by Politico.
Nina Olson, a former national taxpayer advocate, accused IRS Chief Executive Officer Frank Bisignano of deliberately holding back the release. “I think they are hiding stuff that doesn’t line up with all the crowing the CEO has been doing,” she told Politico.
Johnson told Politico that the IRS, rather than the Treasury Department, has legal authority to decide when to issue the data. “It’s unusual,” he said. He also cautioned that the reason for the delay is not clear: “There’s all sorts of things it could be—you can’t know until you see the data whether it’s they don’t like the answers, or whether the data themselves really isn’t useful.”
The New Republic also reported that the 2025 tax law’s carveouts and exemptions may have made the tax code harder for the IRS to process. The agency has separately faced criticism over withholding its tax-gap report, which measures taxes owed but not paid.
No release date was reported. The IRS position, as described by The New Republic, is that publication depends on Treasury approval.
