Instagram Drops End-to-End Encryption for DMs

Instagram Ends End-to-End Encryption for DMs Instagram, a Meta Platforms subsidiary, ceased supporting end-to-end encryption (E2EE) for direct messages (DMs) globally on May 8, 2024. This decision reverses Meta's previous commitment to expand E2EE across its messaging platforms, impacting user privacy and data accessibility.

The discontinuation of E2EE means Instagram can now access the content of direct messages, including text, images, videos, and voice notes. This change has been welcomed by child protection organizations, such as the NSPCC, which argue E2EE can facilitate the spread of illicit content undetected. Conversely, privacy advocates, including Big Brother Watch, have criticized the move, viewing it as a regression in user data protection.

Meta cited low user opt-in rates for the optional E2EE feature as a reason for its decision. However, analysts suggest the move may also align with Meta's strategic focus on training artificial intelligence models, which can utilize messaging data. The company had previously rolled out E2EE for Facebook Messenger in 2023 and initially planned to make it a default feature on Instagram. Users with affected chats have until May 8, 2026, to download any media or messages they wish to retain.
