India Considers Domestic Content Mandates for Future Rooftop Solar Schemes
India is considering mandating locally produced inverters and battery components for its rooftop solar scheme to bolster domestic manufacturing and energy…

The Indian government is evaluating the implementation of mandatory domestic content requirements for inverters and battery components under the next phase of rooftop solar program. This policy shift aims to reduce reliance on imported equipment and strengthen energy security by extending local manufacturing mandates beyond existing solar module and cell regulations.
Officials indicate that the proposed requirements remain in the conceptual stage as the ministry reviews stakeholder recommendations. The initiative seeks to integrate domestic manufacturing incentives into the broader framework of the current residential solar subsidy scheme.
Despite ongoing efforts, the program is currently projected to fall short of its 10-million-installation target for the current fiscal year, with officials anticipating a potential extension of one to two months. Implementation challenges persist, including administrative delays in loan processing, subsidy disbursement, and resistance from power distribution companies concerned about revenue erosion from reduced conventional electricity consumption.
