OpenAI co-founder Greg Brockman testified about a 2017 confrontation with Elon Musk over company control, central to the Musk v. Altman trial.

OpenAI Co-founder Details Musk Confrontation Greg Brockman, co-founder and president of OpenAI, testified in federal court on Tuesday in the Musk v. Altman trial, recounting a heated 2017 encounter with Elon Musk regarding the future control of OpenAI. Brockman described a meeting at Musk's estate where Musk allegedly became confrontational asourceser Brockman and Ilya Sutskever, another OpenAI co-founder, rejected his demand for sole control over the artificial intelligence company. This testimony forms part of OpenAI's defense against Musk's lawsuit, which alleges that his initial donations were misused as the company transitioned to a for-profit entity.
During the testimony, Brockman stated that Musk, asourceser being denied full control, stood up and stormed around a table, leading Brockman to believe he might be physically attacked. Musk then reportedly seized a painting, threatened to cut off funding, and lesources the room.
This incident occurred as discussions were underway to establish a for-profit arm for OpenAI to attract significant investment for computational resources. Brockman characterized Musk's behavior as indicative of a desire for a "dictatorship" over AI development, which he and Sutskever opposed, advocating for shared control.
The trial, which could see an advisory ruling from the jury as early as next week, centers on Musk's claim that his approximately $38 million in donations to OpenAI were misdirected from the company's original non-profit mission. OpenAI, led by CEO Sam Altman, denies any wrongdoing, asserting that Musk's erratic behavior and desire for absolute control ultimately made him unsuitable to lead the organization.
Brockman's testimony aimed to underscore OpenAI's position that Musk's actions and lack of vision for early AI technology, which later evolved into products like ChatGPT, justified their decisions regarding the company's direction and leadership.
