Istanbul Restricts Access to Taksim Square for Gezi Anniversary

Ahead of planned commemorations for the 13th anniversary of the Gezi Park protests, Istanbul's Governor's Office has imposed significant transportation restrictions in the Taksim area. These measures include the temporary closure of several metro, funicular, and cable car lines serving the central district.

Metro Istanbul announced that, effective 1:00 PM local time, the Taksim Station on the M2 Yenikapı-Hacıosman Metro Line would be closed to passengers. Additionally, the F1 Taksim-Kabataş Funicular Line and the TF Maçka-Taşkışla Cable Car Line have ceased operations until further notice, according to official statements.

Access Points Closed

Further restrictions include the closure of the İstiklal Avenue exit at Şişhane Metro Station. Metro Istanbul advised commuters to use alternative entrances and exits at the station, noting that metro trains would continue to pass through Taksim Station without stopping.

The Gezi Solidarity platform, along with various political parties and non-governmental organizations, had previously announced intentions to hold a press conference in Taksim Square to mark the protest anniversary. These transportation closures precede the scheduled event, leading to heightened security in the vicinity.

Road Closures Implemented

In line with the Governor's directives, numerous streets and avenues in the Beyoğlu and Şişli districts have been closed to vehicular traffic. The Istanbul Police Department has designated alternative routes for drivers and indicated that enhanced security measures will remain in effect throughout the day in the affected areas.

The decision to restrict access reflects a recurring pattern of authorities limiting public gatherings in sensitive areas during politically charged anniversaries. Such measures often aim to prevent large-scale demonstrations, but they can also disrupt daily life and raise questions about freedom of assembly.
