G7 Leaders Commit to Enhanced Ukrainian Defense

G7 leaders concluded a summit in Evian, France, on Wednesday by pledging to bolster Ukraine’s air defense capabilities and intensify economic sanctions against Russia. The bloc, representing Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, the United States, and the European Union, committed to accelerating the delivery of interceptors and long-range systems to support Kyiv’s territorial defense.

The agreement includes a strategic shift to allow Ukraine to produce its own military interceptors under new licensing arrangements. This move addresses persistent shortages in US-supplied anti-ballistic systems. Simultaneously, the G7 announced plans to tighten sanctions on Russia’s oil and gas sectors, citing a new geopolitical opening created by a US-brokered deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.

The summit also addressed broader regional stability, with leaders calling for an immediate ceasefire in Lebanon to facilitate the disarmament of Hezbollah. Following these security discussions, the G7 presidency is expected to pivot toward critical mineral supply chains, aiming to reduce Western reliance on Chinese exports and mitigate risks associated with market dumping. The implementation of these defense and economic measures remains subject to ongoing coordination between the US and its European partners.
