G20 health ministers have formally committed to supporting the World Health Organization’s (WHO) inaugural Investment Round. This initiative seeks to secure predictable, flexible funding to support the organization’s long-term global health strategy.
To date, the initiative has garnered over $1 billion in pledges from 63 contributors, including several first-time voluntary donors from the African, Western Pacific, and South-East Asian regions. Participating nations have emphasized that sustainable financing is critical to maintaining the organization’s operational mandate and global health security.
Additional financial commitments are expected during the G20 Leaders’ Summit scheduled for November 18–19, 2024. South Africa has confirmed it will prioritize the continuation of this sustainable financing framework during its upcoming G20 presidency, signaling a long-term shift in the organization’s funding model.
