Amazon Pharmacy Launches Same-Day GLP-1 Delivery

Amazon Pharmacy said on April 8, 2024, that it will begin offering Eli Lilly and Company's newly approved GLP-1 medicine, Foundayo, with same-day delivery for adults in the United States who have obesity or overweight conditions. The company framed the move as an effort to broaden access to a once-daily oral treatment by using its nationwide delivery network. Customers will be able to place orders through Amazon Pharmacy once they have a valid prescription.

The company said the ordering experience will include real-time visibility into medication availability and pricing that is presented clearly at checkout. Amazon Pharmacy also outlined how pricing will work depending on whether a customer uses insurance or pays cash. With insurance, Foundayo starts at $1 per day, or $25 per month, according to the announcement.

For customers paying without insurance, Amazon Pharmacy said Foundayo will be available for $5 per day, or $149 per month. The company added that manufacturer-sponsored coupons will be applied automatically for eligible customers, positioning the feature as a way to reduce out-of-pocket costs without requiring separate coupon steps. Amazon Pharmacy said it has used automatic coupons across its business and highlighted savings tied to that approach.

On delivery coverage, Amazon Pharmacy said same-day service for Foundayo will be available in nearly 3,000 cities and towns. The company said it expects that footprint to grow to approximately 4,500 by year-end. For customers outside same-day zones, Amazon Pharmacy said it will offer next-day, two-day, or three-day delivery options, depending on location.

Amazon Pharmacy also said it plans to add patient-focused pickup and delivery choices tied to healthcare visits. One option described in the announcement is in-office kiosks supported by licensed pharmacists at select One Medical locations, which would allow patients to receive medications immediately after appointments. The company did not provide a timeline in the announcement for how quickly the kiosk option will roll out or how many sites will be included initially.

Amazon Pharmacy said it has been delivering GLP-1 medications since 2021 and that it provides 24/7 access to pharmacists. It also said customers have saved more than $200 million through automatic coupons, and that GLP-1 medicines represent the largest category of those coupon-driven savings. The company’s update links its logistics capabilities, pharmacy services, and clinic footprint as it expands how patients can obtain prescription treatments.
