Fenerbahçe Leadership Faces Scrutiny Over Financial Deficits

Financial Disclosures Reveal Mounting Debt

During a recent general assembly, leadership at Fenerbahçe detailed the organization's current fiscal standing, highlighting a debt burden that has climbed to €592 million as of late September 2025. Officials characterized the financial trajectory as unsustainable, noting that annual operational costs have reached €611 million. This expenditure level significantly outpaces the club's annual revenue of €457 million, resulting in a record-breaking deficit of roughly €180 million for the 2025-2026 period.

Allegations of Asset Mismanagement

President Aziz Yıldırım utilized the assembly to level formal criticisms against the tenure of his predecessor, Sadettin Saran. Central to these claims is the status of Fenerbahçe University, which Yıldırım alleges was leased in a manner that effectively stripped the club of its ownership rights. He described this arrangement as an improper appropriation of institutional property, further citing concerns over specific agreements involving smaller, yet contentious, financial contracts.

Disputes Over Player Transfer Obligations

The administration also addressed complications surrounding the acquisition of player Youssef En-Nesyri. Reports indicate that a failure to meet installment payments led to a formal notification of a transfer ban from international football authorities in June. Yıldırım asserted that his team was forced to settle these outstanding debts to rectify the situation, publicly questioning the handling of funds previously allocated for these professional obligations.

Revenue Practices Under Review

Deputy Chairman Barış Göktürk provided a breakdown of how previous leadership managed cash flow, pointing to the early collection of future revenues. These practices reportedly included the advance receipt of naming rights, jersey sponsorship income, and banking advances, all of which were allegedly exhausted. Furthermore, the mortgaging of long-term assets and the sale of specific stadium sections were highlighted as factors contributing to the current liquidity crisis.

Future Fiscal Sustainability

The club now faces the difficult task of stabilizing its balance sheet while managing high operational demands. Experts suggest that without immediate and rigorous financial oversight, the organization risks further erosion of its capital base. The path forward will likely require the development of new income streams and a fundamental shift in how the club manages its long-term liabilities to avoid recurring deficits.
