The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Tuesday authorized the marketing of the first fruit-flavored e-cigarettes in the United States for adult use.
The decision allows the sale of four NJOY products—two menthol-flavored and two fruit-flavored varieties (blueberry and watermelon). NJOY is a subsidiary of Altria.
The FDA said the authorization followed a review in which NJOY showed the products meet the agency’s standard of being “appropriate for the protection of public health.” The FDA concluded that the potential benefit to adult smokers who switch completely from combustible cigarettes outweighs the risk to youth.
The move could shape future decisions on other flavored e-cigarette applications, as many flavored vaping products have faced restrictions over concerns they appeal to young people. The FDA said it will continue to regulate and review products that seek authorization to be marketed to U.S. consumers.
