A bespoke Formula 1 helmet, signed by all 20 drivers from the 2026 grid, has generated £151,000 for Make-A-Wish International. This charity auction marks a new record for the highest publicly recorded sale of an unworn replica helmet at auction.
The sale, facilitated through the F1 Authentics platform, also established a new high for charitable contributions from a single item sold via the service. This figure surpasses the previous record of £112,000, which was generated by the sale of race-worn driver apparel.
Record-Breaking Charitable Contributions
The unique helmet, dubbed "Fuel the Magic," was created in collaboration with Disney and sold by Memento Exclusives. Its final bid of £151,000 (approximately $201,000) not only set a new benchmark for replica F1 helmet sales but also the highest amount for a single charitable item sold through F1 Authentics. The prior record was held by Max Verstappen's race-worn overalls from the 2023 Canadian Grand Prix.
The proceeds from the "Fuel the Magic" helmet will directly support Make-A-Wish International in granting wishes to children with critical illnesses. The helmet was designed by Bret Iwan, the official voice of Mickey Mouse, alongside Disney's global creative director Bobby Kim, featuring a matt black base with red and yellow accents and Mickey Mouse artwork.
Implications for Sports Memorabilia Market
This outcome underscores the increasing institutional value of high-profile sports memorabilia within the secondary market. The successful auction highlights the efficacy of leveraging professional sports partnerships for large-scale philanthropic initiatives, potentially influencing future corporate social responsibility strategies within the racing sector.
Fans who missed the auction will have another opportunity to see the design, as a second identical helmet is scheduled for public display at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event in Anaheim, California, from August 14-16.
