SpaceX IPO Elevates Musk's Net Worth
Elon Musk's net worth surpassed $1 trillion on Friday following the stock market debut of his company, SpaceX, on the Nasdaq exchange in New York. The initial public offering (IPO) valued the artificial intelligence and reusable rocket company at $2.2 trillion, with shares opening at $150 and closing at $160.95 after an initial offer price of $135. This development positioned Musk as the world's first trillionaire, primarily due to his 42% ownership stake in SpaceX, valued at approximately $884 billion, alongside his 12% stake in Tesla, worth an additional $183 billion.
The IPO raised $75 billion from investors, earmarked for funding SpaceX's continued investments in artificial intelligence and reusable rocket technology. The company's valuation is largely based on future earnings potential, as it reported losses exceeding $9 billion in 2025 and 2026 due to significant spending on AI and infrastructure. SpaceX's operations include manufacturing and launching rockets, operating its Starlink satellite constellation, and owning the xAI artificial intelligence company.
The financial milestone has intensified discussions regarding wealth inequality, with Musk's net worth now comparable to the economic output of nations like Poland or Switzerland. The listing also created over 4,400 new millionaires among current and former SpaceX staff who held company stock. However, Musk's trillionaire status is primarily on paper, as his wealth is tied to stock values, and he is restricted from selling his SpaceX shares for at least one year.
