EA buyout lifts games M&A to $57.8 billion in Q3

Aream & Co counted 54 games-industry mergers and acquisitions worth $57.8 billion in the third quarter, including Electronic Arts’ $55 billion leveraged buyout completed Aug. 5, according to a Gamesindustry.biz trade-press report published Oct. 12.

The report, citing Aream’s Video Game Market Update, shows how one debt-backed takeover shaped a quarter that otherwise looked stable: EA represented about 95% of disclosed M&A value, according to Atlas360 calculations.

Deal mix

The EA transaction dominated the dollar total in a quarter when deal volume did not accelerate. A leveraged buyout is an acquisition financed substantially with borrowed money, a structure that can magnify returns but also raises the debt burden on the acquired company.

Aream & Co said content-focused transactions picked up, citing 18 developer and publisher control deals with combined value above $100 million in 2026 through the third quarter. Control deals are transactions that give a buyer command of the target.

Asia accounted for several large transactions. The report cited Alibaba’s sale of Lingxi Games to Trustar Capital for more than $1.5 billion, Netmarble founder Bang Jun-hyuk’s purchase of Tencent’s Netmarble stake for $270 million and Sony Music Entertainment’s $180 million minority investment in GungHo.

Spending pressure

Consumer spending trends were more uneven. Aream & Co said mobile in-app purchases declined 7% year on year to $19.6 billion in the third quarter because of a smaller install base, while console revenue fell 12% year on year to $14.1 billion, which it called “the steepest drop in two years.”

The console decline covered all three main platforms, according to Aream & Co. Nintendo revenue fell 18% year on year in the third quarter, Xbox declined 10% and PlayStation dropped 9%. Separate Circana data for the U.S.

showed hardware unit sales fell 15% year on year to 559,000 in August, the lowest August level since 2013.

PC spending was stronger, with double-digit growth led by co-op and indie titles, Gamesindustry.biz reported, citing Alinea Analytics data. Wardogs generated $103 million in the third quarter, followed by Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynched at $55 million and Dazed Games’ How to Fish at $11 million.

Funding improves

Financing activity also improved. Aream & Co said public-market revenue jumped 122% year on year to $1.3 billion across 13 third-quarter deals, while private investment revenue more than tripled year on year to $2.8 billion across 137 deals.

The mix of funding shifted toward later stages. Late-stage rounds reached $2.0 billion in the third quarter, the highest level since the fourth quarter of 2021, while seed funding fell to a five-year low as capital moved toward Series A rounds.

The data leaves open how broad the recovery in games dealmaking is beyond the EA transaction. Aream & Co identified more listings in the pipeline, including Catalyst’s pricing of a $200 million initial public offering and preparations by PlaySimple and Fellowship to go public.

What to watch

Rockstar said players should wait until Nov. 19 to experience Grand Theft Auto 6 after leaked gameplay and story material circulated online, according to Gamesindustry.biz. The date gives investors and publishers a visible test of demand in a console market that Aream & Co said contracted in the third quarter.
