Diplomatic Relations Terminated Between Burkina Faso and France

Burkina Faso’s military junta formally severed diplomatic ties with France on Friday, citing alleged neo-colonial interference and persistent actions against national interests. The decision follows a period of deteriorating relations since Captain Ibrahim Traore seized power in a 2022 coup and subsequently expelled French military forces from the country.

The mechanism of this breakdown stems from the junta’s pivot toward alternative security and economic partnerships, specifically with Russia and China, as it struggles to contain a decade-long Islamist insurgency. The transmission of this policy shift has resulted in the systematic removal of French institutional presence, including the expulsion of diplomats and the dissolution of formal cooperation frameworks. The consequence is a complete rupture in official state-to-state communication, effectively isolating the Burkinabe government from its former colonial partner.

This move aligns with the broader regional trend observed in the Alliance of the Sahel States, which includes Mali and Niger. Having already withdrawn from the Economic Community of West African States in January 2025, the junta continues to consolidate power domestically while dismantling Western institutional links. The French Foreign Ministry characterized the move as a hostile drift, advising its remaining nationals to maintain heightened vigilance as the diplomatic vacuum persists.
