BOJ rate pressure rises as AI demand lifts prices

Bank of Japan Governor Kazuo Ueda said on Oct. 19 that demand tied to artificial intelligence is supporting investment and exports while pushing prices higher. Reaction pending.

The remarks put the timing of potential rate increases back in focus for Japan's central bank, which is weighing price pressure against the need to keep inflation near its 2% objective.

Officials said AI demand is helping lift corporate investment and export activity, two channels that can feed into broader growth. Ueda also linked that demand to higher prices, making the inflation path more relevant for rate policy.

For rates markets, the mechanism is direct: if AI-related demand keeps investment firm and export orders resilient, officials may have less room to delay policy tightening. If price gains cool instead, the central bank may have more space to wait before raising rates.

The global macro link runs through Japan's yield curve. Higher Japanese rates can affect yen funding costs and overseas bond flows, while a slower path would leave Japan closer to the low-rate stance that has shaped global carry trades.

Through the Oct. 19 session, the rates signal is whether Japanese government bond yields move to price a higher probability of a near-term BOJ hike after Ueda's comments.
