BİST 100 falls 1.52% after Turkish officials resign

The departures put market oversight in focus as investors assess continuity at the finance ministry and capital markets regulator.

BİST 100 falls 1.52% after Turkish officials resign

BİST 100 fell 1.52% on Oct. 19 after the reported resignations of Hazine ve Maliye Bakanlığı deputy Osman Çelik and SPK Chairman Mahmut Sütçü.

The drop put Borsa İstanbul equities on the market's risk screen, with the initial figure showing a 1.52% loss for the benchmark index. No sector-level move, turnover figure or closing level was included in the initial data.

Çelik was identified as a deputy at Hazine

The resignations touch two posts linked to fiscal policy and market oversight. Çelik was identified as a deputy at Hazine ve Maliye Bakanlığı, while Sütçü was identified as chairman of the Sermaye Piyasası Kurulu, the capital markets regulator known as SPK.

Maliye Bakanlığı

For equities, the immediate issue is continuity. If investors treat the departures as an administrative reshuffle, attention may return to earnings, rates and foreign flows; if the resignations point to wider personnel changes, banks and brokerages would face a longer period of policy-risk pricing.

The global macro channel is narrower than for rates or the lira, but Turkish equities are part of the emerging-market risk basket watched by overseas funds. The next check comes at the Tuesday, Oct. 20, open in Istanbul, when investors will test whether the 1.52% move extends or steadies.
