Asia-Pacific Economic Growth Outlook Faces Fiscal and Sectoral Risks

Regional growth in Asia is projected to reach 4.8% in 2026, an upward revision from the 4.4% forecast in April. However, this growth is expected to decelerate to 4.4% by 2027, down from 5.0% in 2025. The economic landscape is increasingly bifurcated between AI-driven economies and those facing persistent inflationary pressures.

Taiwan and South Korea have seen significant growth upgrades due to AI-related demand, with projected expansions of 10.7% and 3.3% respectively. Conversely, low-income economies and Pacific island nations face downward revisions, with growth now estimated at 3.7% and 2.6%. This concentration of growth in tech-heavy sectors creates systemic exposure to potential market corrections in AI valuations.

Fiscal vulnerabilities remain a primary concern as public debt levels stay elevated across the region. Rising global borrowing costs and potential market volatility in the U.S., U.K., and eurozone threaten to increase debt-servicing burdens. Policymakers are advised to prioritize fiscal consolidation and labor market reforms to mitigate risks from energy price shocks and shrinking workforces, as the region currently accounts for over half of global economic growth.
