A significant fire at Tata Steel's Port Talbot plant in South Wales on Wednesday evening, around 20:00 BST, caused substantial damage to a vital production line. Emergency services, including the Mid and West Wales Fire Service, responded to the incident, which led to local residents being advised to remain indoors due to large plumes of smoke visible across the area.
The blaze originated in one of the site's processing lines. Tata Steel confirmed that staff were safely evacuated, and no injuries were reported. While the fire was contained to a specific area, the company's Hot Rolling Mill was temporarily paused as a precautionary measure, though it was unaffected and expected to resume operations shortly. The full extent of the damage and the cause of the fire are currently under assessment, as fire services maintained control of the affected zone through Thursday evening.
The incident prompted a call from Unite general secretary Sharon Graham for swift rebuilding of operations and measures to protect jobs within Tata and its supply chain. Natural Resources Wales is collaborating with emergency services to mitigate potential environmental impacts on local watercourses and air quality. Approximately 100 responders worked overnight to manage the incident, with reports indicating part of the affected building collapsed, complicating firefighting efforts.
