Ankara Prepares for Major NATO Summit

The Ankara Governor's Office has outlined significant security protocols in anticipation of the critical NATO Summit scheduled for July 7-8 in the capital. A directive signed by Governor Yakup Canpolat indicates that public sector employees, excluding those directly involved in summit operations, will receive administrative leave during this period.

These measures aim to ensure the summit proceeds without incident and with maximum security. The city will see a broad range of organizational and safety arrangements put into effect.

Administrative Leave for Public Employees

During the NATO Summit in Ankara, public sector personnel in specific districts will be granted administrative leave. In Altındağ, Çankaya, Etimesgut, Gölbaşı, Keçiören, Mamak, Pursaklar, Sincan, and Yenimahalle, all staff not assigned to summit duties or essential services will be on leave from July 6 to July 12.

This initiative seeks to reduce congestion, particularly in areas where summit activities are concentrated, and to facilitate the effective implementation of security measures. Adjustments to urban life are also part of the plan.

Restrictions on Public Events and Designated Security Zones

The directive also imposes a ban on public gatherings such as exams, symposiums, panels, graduation ceremonies, festivals, concerts, and celebrations across the city from 6:00 AM on Monday, July 6, until midnight on Sunday, July 12. This restriction is intended to prevent any disruption to the summit's diplomatic proceedings and security requirements.

Furthermore, any activities that could impede traffic flow or lead to large crowds will be prohibited along designated routes for delegates, around hotels housing guests, and near the Presidential Complex and ATO Congresium. While events like weddings outside these sensitive areas remain unaffected, similar activities within these zones will require approval from the district governorship.

Diplomatic Significance of the Summit

The NATO Summit hosted by Ankara holds considerable international diplomatic importance. Scheduled for July 7-8 at the Presidential Complex, the event is expected to draw numerous world leaders, including US President Donald Trump, according to statements from US Secretary of State Rubio. This gathering will be a platform for crucial decisions concerning global security and cooperation.
