AGNC sees 18%-20% ROE as MBS yields near 6.5%
The mortgage REIT tied its return outlook to Agency MBS yields, leverage and a $992 million at-the-market equity raise.

AGNC Investment Corp. said on its Q3 2026 earnings call on Oct. 20 that expected return on equity was 18%-20%, with Agency mortgage-backed securities yields near 6.5%.
The company paired the outlook with a book-value drop and a $992 million at-the-market equity raise, a share-sale mechanism that can fund portfolio assets without a single marketed offering.
Agency MBS yield spread
Company officials said the return outlook was linked to Agency MBS spreads and yields, leverage and the capital raised through the at-the-market program. Agency MBS are mortgage bonds backed by government-sponsored entities, making spread levels central to returns for mortgage REITs.
The update puts AGNC's equity story on the balance between higher asset yields and book-value pressure. If Agency MBS yields hold near 6.5%, portfolio income can support the company's stated ROE range; if spreads widen from here, book value can face additional pressure as bond prices fall.
For the mortgage REIT sector, the mechanism is similar: wider spreads can improve reinvestment yields but mark existing holdings lower. That makes leverage and fresh equity more important for firms seeking to add assets while managing book-value volatility.
The next dated marker is AGNC's next quarterly update after Q4 2026, when investors will be able to compare the stated 18%-20% ROE range with book value, leverage and the use of the $992 million raised through the at-the-market program.
