Colts Draft McGowan Despite Past The Indianapolis Colts selected running back Seth McGowan in the seventh round of the April NFL Draft, providing him a professional opportunity despite a past felony charge. McGowan, dismissed from the University of Oklahoma in 2021 following an armed robbery and assault charge, pleaded guilty to larceny and served three months in jail, followed by a year of probation. This selection marks a significant return to high-level football for McGowan, who spent two years out of the sport.

McGowan's journey back to collegiate football involved working various odd jobs, including dishwashing, and rigorous training. He eventually played at Butler Community College in 2023, then transferred to New Mexico State in 2024, rushing for 823 yards. In 2025, he moved to Kentucky, where he recorded 12 rushing touchdowns, establishing himself as a prominent SEC rusher.

The Colts conducted extensive vetting, leveraging existing relationships with McGowan's former coaches, including New Mexico State coach Tony Sanchez and Colts running backs coach DeAndre Smith. General Manager Chris Ballard indicated the organization believes McGowan has atoned for his past actions. McGowan's potential role with the Colts includes providing support to star running back Jonathan Taylor, whose workload the team aims to reduce from his NFL-high 323 carries last season.
