P20 gun brandishing leaves Metro rider injured in Prince George's

Metro Transit Police said an argument preceded the incident near Annapolis Road and 85th Street, and officers are searching for a suspect.

P20 gun brandishing leaves Metro rider injured in Prince George's

Metro Transit Police said one passenger suffered minor injuries on Oct. 12 in Prince George’s County after leaving a P20 bus near Annapolis Road and 85th Street following a reported gun brandishing.

The case matters to county riders because the P20 is part of the regional bus system serving Maryland commuters; Metro Transit Police said in an Oct. 12 statement that one person was taken to a hospital.

Police said the episode began with an argument involving two people on the bus. Metro said one of them displayed a firearm, prompting the injured passenger to flee.

“One of the individuals brandished a firearm, causing the victim to flee,” Metro said in the statement. “The victim sustained an injury off the bus while fleeing the area.”

Metro Transit Police described the passenger’s injuries as minor. Officials did not provide more information about the person’s condition, the nature of the injury or whether anyone else aboard the bus was hurt.

Transit officials said investigators were working to review security footage and speak with witnesses who were on the bus during the confrontation. Officers also searched for the person accused of showing the firearm.

Service on the affected route experienced temporary delays while police handled the scene, transit officials said. They also said Metro was coordinating with local law enforcement to identify the person involved and determine what led to the panic aboard the bus.

For riders, the immediate question is whether the police investigation leads to an arrest and whether Metro provides more detail about what happened on board. The incident also puts attention on how quickly transit police and local agencies can respond when a confrontation moves from a bus to the street.

No suspect had been identified publicly Monday night. Police also had not said whether a firearm was recovered, whether charges were pending or what started the argument.

For riders in Prince George’s County and across the Washington region, the incident adds to day-to-day concerns about safety on buses and at stops. Metro’s bus network connects Maryland, D.C. and Northern Virginia, so disruptions and enforcement questions can affect commuters beyond the immediate location.

Metro Transit Police said they are leading the investigation. The next public step is any update from police on the suspect search or the circumstances of the reported brandishing.
