Zelensky says air defences overwhelmed after strike

President Volodymyr Zelensky renewed his appeal for additional Western air-defence systems after Ukrainian officials said an overnight Russian attack killed nine people and overwhelmed existing protection.

Officials said multiple targets were hit during the strike, as authorities began counting casualties and assessing damage. Zelensky said current air-defence capacity is being pushed beyond its limits and argued that faster deliveries are needed to reduce the risk to civilians and key sites.

Interception data cited in calls for new deliveries

Zelensky pointed to interception figures that, according to officials, showed only one ballistic missile was downed out of 27 fired overnight. He cited the result as evidence that Ukraine needs both long-range and short-range air-defence systems in greater quantities.

Officials said the shortfall increases danger for populated areas and makes it harder to shield critical infrastructure. They said Kyiv would continue urging allied governments to speed up the transfer of defensive equipment, including missiles and radar systems.

Allied decisions and an August 8, 2026 window Western capitals have previously supplied air-defence missiles and radars, officials said, and Ukrainian authorities intend to press for accelerated shipments. Zelensky’s renewed request comes as officials said a reaction from partners is still pending.

Officials said attention is now focused on whether additional air-defence deliveries are approved by August 8, 2026, which Kyiv has signalled as a near-term checkpoint for evaluating new aid commitments.

Investigations and damage assessment still underway

Officials said investigations into the strike are continuing and that casualty figures remain subject to verification as work proceeds. They added that information on specific locations and a full accounting of damage will be released after teams complete on-the-ground reporting.

Zelensky said the latest attack underlines the urgency of strengthening air defences to prevent further casualties and limit damage, while officials stressed that the immediate priority is confirming impacts across affected areas.
