Robinhood said Wednesday it is rolling out new tools that let artificial intelligence agents place stock trades and make purchases on users’ behalf. The company described the products as an effort to bring autonomous finance technology to retail customers, a capability that has been more common in institutional investing. Robinhood said the features will work by allowing users to connect third-party AI assistants to carry out investing and spending instructions.
The products are called Agentic Trading and an Agentic Credit Card. Robinhood said users can instruct agents to rebalance portfolios, track specific market themes such as AI-related stocks, and execute trading strategies automatically. Separate agents can also look for deals and complete purchases using designated virtual credit cards.
Robinhood said it is initially offering the tools with beta support for stock trading. The company said it plans to add options, cryptocurrency and futures later.
How Robinhood says it will limit risks
Robinhood said it has built guardrails aimed at reducing the risks of autonomous trading for retail users. The company said dedicated “agentic trading” accounts are separated from customers’ main portfolios, limiting access to only the capital users choose to allocate to an agent.
The system will also send notifications when trades occur and allow customers to disconnect an agent immediately, Robinhood said. For spending, the company said users will keep control through spending limits and manual approvals.
Controls for disputes and monitoring
Robinhood said its fraud-monitoring systems are designed to review both user instructions and an agent’s actions if disputes arise. The company did not provide a timeline for broader availability beyond the initial beta support.
Investors will be watching how widely the tools are adopted and whether the safeguards hold up as Robinhood expands support beyond stock trading.
