Xbox tests streak badge tied to 3 weekly plays
The dashboard experiment would make repeat console activity visible under a player’s gamertag, though its rollout scope remains unclear.

Xbox is testing a dashboard “streak” badge for console users who play a game at least three times a week, Stephen Totilo said in an X post on Oct. 12.
The test matters because Xbox would be putting an engagement prompt directly into the console interface, at a time when Microsoft’s gaming unit faces scrutiny over Game Pass costs and studio operations.
Totilo said the streak appears below a user’s gamertag on the Xbox dashboard. In a follow-up post, he pointed to the “1 next to the flame in the upper left,” indicating a visible count paired with a flame icon.
The reported mechanic is straightforward: a player must use an Xbox console for game play on at least three occasions in a week to maintain the streak. Totilo wrote: “A streak requires a person to play a game on their Xbox at least three times a week.”
The available material does not include a Microsoft announcement, a list of test markets, eligibility rules, timing for wider release or whether the feature can be hidden. It also does not say whether streaks connect to Xbox achievements, Rewards, Game Pass quests or any other incentive system.
Streaks are a familiar retention tool across games and digital services because they turn repeated activity into a visible progress marker. On Xbox, the placement described by Totilo would give the mechanic unusually prominent real estate: the main dashboard identity area, rather than a buried rewards menu or app-specific challenge page.
That makes the test worth watching beyond the surface-level badge. Console platforms compete not only on hardware and software libraries, but also on habit formation: how often users turn the machine on, how quickly they find something to play and whether subscriptions feel active enough to keep.
The experiment lands during a difficult stretch for Xbox. Atlas360 reported on Oct. 7 that remarks by Xbox CEO Asha Sharma linked Game Pass to a costly content treadmill, raising questions about how Microsoft balances subscriber value with profitability.
Atlas360 also reported on Oct. 5 that IGN said Ninja Theory employees had begun farewells after Xbox announced plans to close the Hellblade developer.
Those broader pressures do not prove why Xbox is testing the streak display. The source material supports only the narrower point: Xbox is experimenting with a visible weekly-play counter for console users. The business rationale, if any, has not been disclosed in the supplied material.
The next signpost is whether Microsoft confirms the test, expands it to more users or attaches rewards to maintaining a streak. For now, the report describes an experiment, not a platform-wide feature.
