WeLion New Energy Expands Semi-Solid-State Battery Production and Testing

WeLion New Energy is scaling production of semi-solid-state batteries, aiming to address energy density limitations in the electric vehicle and maritime transport sectors. The company currently operates 11 gigawatt-hours of annual manufacturing capacity, with an additional 18 gigawatt-hours under construction to support commercial expansion.

Technological deployment remains constrained by high production costs and limited manufacturing volume. While the company achieved a laboratory energy density of 824 watt-hours per kilogram in 2025, commercial viability for such high-density cells remains unproven. Operational data regarding cycle life and capacity degradation for these prototypes has not been disclosed.

Strategic focus is shifting toward specialized applications, including drone power systems and inland cargo shipping. The company intends to introduce all-solid-state battery technology for automotive use by 2027. Market competitiveness remains dependent on the firm's ability to reduce manufacturing costs to levels comparable with established lithium-ion battery producers.
