US Stocks Flash Warning as "Buffett Indicator" Soars

The Buffett Indicator, a widely followed yardstick for equity valuation, climbed to 227% in April 2026, a level that sits well above the 200% line that investor Warren Buffett previously described as “playing with fire.” The measure compares the total value of U.S. stocks with U.S. Gross Domestic Product (GDP), and the latest reading points to a market that looks expensive relative to the size of the economy.

Data cited from GuruFocus and analysis referenced by Fortune show the indicator at 227% for April 2026. By design, the metric frames stock-market value against economic output, offering a high-level check on whether equity prices have moved far ahead of underlying activity.

Two additional valuation and profitability signals are also elevated alongside the Buffett Indicator reading. Corporate profits are currently 12% of GDP, which is above the historical average range of 7% to 8%. Separately, the S&P 500’s forward price-to-earnings ratio, calculated using Q1 GAAP net earnings, is above 28, which is described as roughly two-thirds higher than the 100-year average of about 17.

Together, these figures indicate that investors are paying more for each unit of expected earnings than long-run norms, while profit margins are also at unusually high levels. The combination matters because valuation multiples and profit shares can influence how sensitive markets are to shifts in growth expectations, earnings outcomes, or discount rates, even though the figures themselves do not specify what catalyst might change sentiment.

Historical episodes cited alongside the indicator show that readings near or above 200% have previously been followed by sizable declines. When the Buffett Indicator reached 200% in March 2000 during the dot-com bubble, the S&P 500 later dropped by about 50%. A level just above 200% in November 2021 was followed by a 19% decline.

At the same time, the metric is not presented as a timing tool. The April 2026 reading signals the potential for a reversion in valuations, but it does not indicate when such a move could occur, and the source material does not tie the current level to any specific near-term trigger.
