Western Australia Initiates Formal Review of Proposed Three-University Merger

The Western Australian government has commissioned a steering committee to evaluate the feasibility of merging the University of Western Australia, Curtin University, and Murdoch University. This investigation follows concerns regarding the potential multi-billion dollar fiscal impact of the consolidation.

Mark Barnaba, deputy chairman of Fortescue Metals Group, has been appointed to lead the committee. The review will assess the structural and financial merits of integrating these three major public institutions into a single entity.

Government officials maintain that the investigation is necessary to determine the long-term viability of the state's higher education sector. The process faces significant opposition from stakeholders concerned about the operational risks and capital requirements associated with such a large-scale institutional merger.
