Tate & Lyle Shares Soar on Takeover Bid
London-listed food ingredients manufacturer Tate & Lyle saw its shares surge by 55% on Thursday following news of a potential 2.74 billion pound ($3.7 billion) takeover bid from U.S. rival Ingredion. The proposal values Tate & Lyle at up to 615 pence per share, representing a 64% premium over its closing price on Wednesday. Ingredion has until June 11 to submit a firm offer under UK takeover regulations.
This potential acquisition could establish a food and beverage ingredients entity valued at over $10 billion. Both companies have faced challenges, with Tate & Lyle experiencing declining revenue due to weak U.S. bakery demand and rising costs, while Ingredion has seen softer demand for its traditional starches and sweeteners. Ingredion's shares declined by 2.8% following the announcement.
The proposed deal comes as consumer preferences shift towards low-calorie and plant-based options, areas where both companies have been adapting. Tate & Lyle, known for artificial sweeteners, expanded its plant-based product portfolio with the acquisition of CP Kelco in 2024. Ingredion stated that a potential transaction would yield significant benefits for shareholders, customers, and employees.
