Ukraine Reclaims Territory, Targets Russian Logistics

Ukraine reported net territorial gains in May 2026, reversing a trend of Russian advances. Ukrainian Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskii stated that the ratio of liberated to lost territories was approximately 100 square kilometers in Ukraine's favor.

Independent assessments, such as those from the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), indicated even larger Ukrainian gains, estimating Russia lost control of about 280 square kilometers while seizing or infiltrating 40 square kilometers during the month. These gains contribute to a total of 600 square kilometers reclaimed by Ukraine in the first five months of 2026.

This shift is attributed to Ukraine's strategy of disrupting Russian supply lines. Ukrainian Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov reported a doubling of strikes on enemy targets more than 50 kilometers from the front line in May compared to April, totaling nearly 2,000 strikes.

This logistical interdiction has significantly impacted Russian military traffic, with a reported 70 percent reduction along the M-14 motorway in the Kherson and Zaporizhia regions. Subsequent Ukrainian actions, including striking a bridge on the E105 highway, further constrained Russian resupply routes, leading to fuel shortages in Crimea.

Ukrainian forces also demonstrated increased effectiveness in drone warfare. Syrskii noted that Ukrainian short- and medium-range drones hit 180,000 targets in May, a 12.7 percent increase from April. Concurrently, Ukrainian defenders improved their ability to intercept Russian Shahed drones, with shoot-downs increasing by 50 percent to approximately 4,000 in May, despite a 25 percent increase in Russian Shahed launches.
