The United Kingdom economy expanded by 0.1 percent in May, according to data released by the Office for National Statistics on Thursday. This marginal increase follows a slight contraction in April and indicates a stabilization of national output amid fluctuating industrial performance.
The primary driver of this growth was the service sector, which successfully offset concurrent declines in the production and construction industries. While the service sector provided the necessary momentum to return the economy to positive territory, the contraction in manufacturing and building activity highlights ongoing volatility within the broader industrial base.
On a quarterly basis, the economy grew by 0.7 percent during the three months ending in May compared to the preceding three-month period. This medium-term trend suggests that despite monthly fluctuations linked to external geopolitical pressures and supply chain sensitivities, the underlying economic trajectory remains in a phase of slow, incremental recovery.
